Iron Man Part III
ou probably know that Jon Favreau had to leave the Iron Man franchise. So Marvel was looking for a new director. Well sounds like Shane Black got the job! He previously directed the movie Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, but is first and foremost a writer (Lethal Weapon 3 and Lethal Weapon 4) .
You probably heard that Director Jon Favreau is leaving the Iron Man franchise. Yep, he won’t helm the movie Iron Man 3:
Iron Man 3 Trailer
As long as Marvel keeps a close eye on the production and if Robert Downey Jr reprises his role as Tony Stark aka Iron Man, I guess Shane Black will be fine as director of Iron Man 3. What do you think?
“It’s true, I’m directing Magic Kingdom, not Iron Man 3. I’ve had a great run with Marvel and wish them the best.”

_Director Jon Favreau
Kind of sad, but don’t worry the film hasn’t been canceled and Robert Downey will reprise his role as Tony Stark aka Iron Man.

Who do you think could take over the director’s seat for Iron Man 3?
“In theory, Iron Man 3 is going to be a sequel or continuation of Thor, Hulk, Captain America and Avengers. This whole world… I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys [the execs at Universal and Marvel].”

_Director Jon Favreau
I doubt it will be a real direct sequel since Iron man 3′s villain is supposed to be the Mandarin, but I guess Iron Man 3 will be peppered with references to events from the films Favreau mentioned.

Disney announced that the movie Iron Man 3 will be released on May 3, 2013.

The Mandarin is the most likely villain in this third opus of the Iron man movie franchise.
“There’s an Iron Man 3. Here’s how I know. When they make the option deals, they include Iron Man 3. So I know they’re planning on 3. Whether that would be before or after Avengers, they’ve announced that Avengers is next but they pushed back The Avengers once, which I thought was encouraging.”
_Director Jon Favreau

The Mandarin is the likely villain of Iron Man 3 and it would actually make sense. Actor Faran Tahir, who played Raza, the mysterious leader of the 10 Rings in the first Iron Man movie, talked about the Mandarin:
“Jon Favreau and the producers are not stupid. They’re also listening in on all of this and wanting to get the pulse of where the audience is. But at some point, they want to introduce Mandarin into the storyline and my character, like Mandarin, was the leader of the Ten Rings. We’re leaving it open because, partly, it makes good business sense for us to leave a little bit of uncertainty for people to speculate on.

He has known for a long time where he wants to take it and I don’t want to speak for him, but my feeling is that the second movie didn’t want to just follow a singular storyline. They wanted to expand the characters to show that it’s not a linear saga like Lord of the Rings. There’s a linkage somewhere in there, but the big idea is to do at least one more Iron Man movie and then go into The Avengers.”
Actor Faran Tahir

I would rather see Iron Man battling against Hulk than against an Arab Mandarin (sorry for Tahir who’s still a great actor, but the Mandarin should be Chinese like in the comic book!), but I think they’re keeping the green beast for the Avengers movie…

Anyway, let’s hope that the movie Iron man 3 will be released between Thor and the Avengers!
Iron Man 3 Movie Villain

“You’ve got to do the Mandarin. The problem with the Mandarin is that the way it’s depicted in the comic books, you don’t want to see that. He has 10 magical rings — that just doesn’t feel right for our franchise. So it’s either tech-based, or the rings are not really rings. But maybe with ‘Thor’ and all those others, you’ll introduce magic to that world and it won’t seem so out of place.”

_Director Jon Favreau
I’m all for the Mandarin as long as they respect the source material: in the comic books the Mandarin is a Chinese guy, not a terrorist from Afghanistan. I don’t know who could play as the Mandarin though… Maybe Jet Li? What do you think? Who would you suggest for the role of the Mandarin in Iron Man 3?
Iron Man 3 Movie Shane Black

It's now confirmed: Shane Black is taking over the director's seat for Iron Man 3! I must admit that I'm a bit surprised by Marvel's choice: Shane Black is mostly as a scriptwriter not as a director. Well let's give him a chance, besides it's not like he will be alone: Marvel is here to keep an eye on the film and Robert Downey Jr will help.
What do you think of Shane Black as director of Iron Man 3?
Iron Man 3 Movie
The second Iron Man movie but it doesn't hinder Paramount from planning a third Iron Man movie. No need to be a soothsayer to foresee that IM2 will a huge success and that the public will be craving for yet another Iron Man movie. So it does make sense to plan Iron Man 3. And it was actually confirmed by Director Jon Favreau himself:

"There’s an Iron Man 3. Here’s how I know. When they make the option deals, they include Iron Man 3. So I know they’re planning on 3. Whether that would be before or after Avengers, they’ve announced that Avengers is next but they pushed back The Avengers once, which I thought was encouraging."
_Director Jon Favreau

IM2 can of weave its story around the demon in the bottle storyline, with Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, facing the aftermaths of his superhero coming out. So if our hero can overcome his personal problems and the villains from IM2, we can expect his real nemesis to show up in the following movie, namely the evil Mandarin, in Iron Man 3.

Actor Faran Tahir, who played Raza, the mysterious leader of the 10 Rings in the first Iron Man, gave some hints that the Mandarin could indeed be the next villain pitted against Iron Man:

"Jon Favreau and the producers are not stupid. They're also listening in on all of this and wanting to get the pulse of where the audience is. But at some point, they want to introduce Mandarin into the storyline and my character, like Mandarin, was the leader of the Ten Rings. We're leaving it open because, partly, it makes good business sense for us to leave a little bit of uncertainty for people to speculate on.

He has known for a long time where he wants to take it and I don't want to speak for him, but my feeling is that the second movie didn't want to just follow a singular storyline. They wanted to expand the characters to show that it's not a linear saga like Lord of the Rings. There's a linkage somewhere in there, but the big idea is to do at least one more Iron Man movie and then go into The Avengers."
_Actor Faran Tahir

Hulk could be an other option, I think he will rather show up as the villain in the Avengers. So I can see only the Mandarin as a credible villain in the movie Iron Man 3.

Now let's think about a possible release date for Iron Man 3. Thor will hit theaters in May 2011 and The Avengers movie is set for a release in Summer 2012. So unless they rush the development of Iron Man 3 to release it in between, the movie Iron Man 3 is more likely to be in 2013 or later.

But releasing Iron Man 3 after the Avengers would bring some complexity because of the new continuity. If they want to keep it simple it would be better to release Iron Man 3 between Thor and the Avengers....

Who would be the best villain for Iron Man 3 according to you? And Should the movie be released before of after the Avengers?

Plot of Iron Man III
"Demon in a Bottle" is Spider-Man 3. It is our hero become non-functioning and completely unlikable so that he can lose everything before having to fight to get it back again. But you can’t really do that in a movie without turning off your audience like Spider-Man 3 did. Alcoholism of that level falls into the category of what screenwriters call “The Sin of Moses”, that sin against the audience so great that he can never be forgiven and enter the holy land of a happy ending. In the comic, they simply wrapped up his alcoholism in a single issue, then pushed it aside and tried to forget it ever happened. Favreau instead made it an integral part of the character, without going so dark that he would lose the audience.

Iron Man is *not* Batman. His appeal isn’t him wrestling with inner demons; his appeal is that he is everything Batman is not. He’s fun, funny and has a hell of a time with the toys he makes. Wanting to transform Iron Man into Batman to satisfy your own dark urges isn’t good storytelling. Instead, it only betrays both the character and the audience. Favreau is getting it right. He’s walking a fine line of presented a damaged hero whilst making that hero’s adventures fun to watch time and again.

Jon Favreau is thinking of The Mandarin for a third film. I’d go with that. That sounds awesome.
