RED 2 Movie Sequel

Summit Entertainment has greenlit a movie sequel to RED (Retired and Extremely Dangerous). Yep, you can get ready for the movie RED 2! No real surprise here actually: the first film was quite profitable after all, it racked in $164 million for a $58-million budget. So it does make sense for Summit Entertainment to plan a sequel.

Screenwriters Erich and Jon Hoeber, who wrote the script of the first film, return to pen the screenplay of RED 2. Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, and John Malkovich will likely return for the sequel (not officially confirmed yet though).

I really did enjoy the first opus of RED so I'm glad to hear about this sequel. But Summit must ensure that Helen Mirren and John Malkovich will reprise their roles: they stole the show in the first film, and I definitely want to see them again in the movie RED 2.

I know there’s resistance to Red based on the fact that the film looks quite a bit different from the Warren Ellis comics upon which it is based. I haven’t read the comic, so can only approach the film based on what I see — and I really enjoy the stuff we’ve been shown so far. There’s one trailer already, and a second premiered today in conjunction with the film’s appearance at the San Diego Comic Con.

Summit did a panel for Red today in Hall H at the San Diego Comic Con, and Warren Ellis, Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren and Karl Urban were among those in attendance. Mirren’s Harvey Pekar shirt got attention, and Urban played to the Con audience when he responded to her calling Pekar a genius with “Are you out of your Vulcan mind?” (Someone give Urban some American Splendor books, quick!)

They offered up this new trailer, which I think does an even better job than the first of getting the idea of the film across. We really get to see Bruce Willis and John Malkovich interacting, and there’s a good glimpse of Richard Dreyfuss and Ernest Borgnine. And we see more of the effects, which look a bit silly, but totally in keeping with the rest of the film. When one of these characters can shoot an RPG in mid-flight, you realize that maybe the intent of the film isn’t to deliver supreme realism. And that’s great.

During Red Flight's diplomatic mission to Adumar, Tycho Celchu used the callsign.
Red Two was the callsign of the second member of Red Squadron. There were a number of starfighter squadrons with this name, and several beings went by the name Red Two.

Remember how awesome Red was? Well, it was, apparently. So the studio has hired the first film’s screenwriters to come up with a sequel. I hope it isn’t called Red 2. I hope it’s Reds, or R2d, or Red II. It’s always classier with Roman numerals. Or maybe Retired, Extremely Dumb. Or Disturbed, or dumpalicious. I’m like Beyonce, who made up Bootilicious, but I did it with dumps. Actually, that’s fairly accurate of everything I do. Beyonce did it first, but then I one up’d her by making it about dumps. Sometimes I do it with Fergie. My lovely lady dumps. SNAP.
