X-Files 3 2012

Spotnitz says that even though he is working on some very hush-hush TV projects right now, that he would welcome a third big screen X-Files movie. However 20th Century Fox hasn’t gotten back to them on that score yet. The producer is the first one to be upfront about the “disappointing” box office of this summer’sX-Files: I Want to Believe. “We opened a week after The Dark Knight and got mowed down by it,” he says. “No one knew what a huge historical event it would be.”
There is still hope for X-Philes though. The movie did “far better overseas” and they will see how well the DVD release of X-Files: I Want to Believe does. (It will be released in the States on 2 December 2008).
Spotnitz says he “welcomes” the opportunity of making another movie with Mulder and Scully. “As you know the date of December 2012 is an important one in The X-Files, and I’d like to focus on that.”
Does that mean that The X-Files 3 will be going one-on-one against Roland Emmerich’s 2012movie? Even Michael Bay has been rumored to have a 2012: War for Souls project based on a Whitley Strieber book in the works at one point. (Some background: the ancient Mayan calendar runs out in December 2012. Some New Agers see this as a sign of the impending apocalypse.) Not in the least, Spotnitz says. “They won’t be directly in competition as they are very different genres.” (He has clearly forgotten a scene in the previous X-Files: Fight the Future movie in which a drunken Mulder famously urinated on a faded Independence Day poster in a deserted alley.)
“We will just have to wait and see,” Spotnitz told the Sci-Fi Movie Page.
Producer Frank Spotnitz (who is also the scriptwriter behind the X-Files TV show and the movies) is still dreaming of / planning a third X-Files movie even if the previous opus, I Want To Believe, didn't perform well. He tried to explained the theatrical failure in a recent interview given to the Sci-Fi Movie Page (here) :
"[the movie] opened a week after 'The Dark Knight' and got mowed down by it. No one knew what a huge historical event it would be."
Frank Spotnitz
I doubt it was really due to Batman or to the Joker... If the movie X-Files 2 was a failure it was rather because people didn't find what they were craving for: all fans wanted to see some alien invasion! Not even a real mention of William, Scully's baby...
So for X-Files 3, Frank Spotnitz should definitely consider a plot revolving around the alien invasion! Otherwise I doubt 20th Century Fox would hurry to green light the third X-Files movie even if the second film may do well on DVD...
Can't be too early for Frank Spotnitz to think about a potential plot for X-Files 3 anyway:
"As you know the date of December 2012 is an important one in 'The X-Files,' and I'd like to focus on that."
_Frank Spotnitz
Let's hope he's hinting at this damn alien invasion!
David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson both enjoyed reprising their roles respectively as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully and would be willing to make a third movie.
But not sure that 20th Century Fox would agree to financially back X-Files 3. Fortunately (?) Frank Spotnitz said he'd be ready to produce X-Files 3 himself.
Frank Spotniz, if you happen to drop by this blog, please: focus on the aliens, and try to tell us what happened to Scully's toddler!
If you give what the fans want, X-Files 3 could be a real blockbuster!
X-Files 3 Movie:
“As far as the X-Files movie I’d like to do next, if we get a chance to do it, would be a return to the heart and soul of the mythology, which is the alien-oriented conspiracy. I think it’s natural for The X-Files to have another movie in 2012, so we’ll see if we get to do it.”-Actor David Duchovny
So he’s confirming what Director and Scriptwriter Frank Spotnitz said. So yes we can be confident that the aliens and the conspiracy will be the central theme of the movie X-Files 3. And I think they’re going to release it in 2012 so to stick to the series mythology. All in all, that’s good news!
Actress Gillian Anderson said that she’s ready to reprise her role as Scully for a new X-Files movie. And according to the rumor, the movie X-Files 3 is in preparation and should be filmed in 2012. That date may ring a bell for X-Files fans. Not so long ago Scriptwriter-producer Frank Spotnitz even hinted at 2012 as a possible plot element for the next X-Files movie sequel:
“As you know the date of December 2012 is an important one in ‘The X-Files,’ and I’d like to focus on that.”
_Frank Spotnitz
According to X-Files lore, the final stage of the Alien invasion is due to start in December 2012. So yes bring it on! We don’t want to see stupid beheaded monsters again…We want the real deal that made X-Files a success: we want the aliens back in the movie X-Files 3!
X-FILES 3 IN 2012
The Sci-Fi Movie Page (here) talked to scriptwriter-producer Frank Spotnitz and get some details about a possible X-Files 3. Frank Spotnitz still wants a third opus in the X-Files movie series even if the X-Files 2 didn’t perform as well as expected. He has an excuse out of his hat to explain the poor results of the second film:X Files 3 Movie Frank Spotnitz
“[the movie] opened a week after ‘The Dark Knight’ and got mowed down by it. No one knew what a huge historical event it would be.”
_Frank Spotnitz
I’d rather say that the absence of aliens has more to do with it than Batman though… And 20th Century Fox isn’t in a hurry to green light X-Files…
But Frank Spotnitz states that did well overseas and that he expects it do well on DVD. So he is adamant at making a third movie with Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) that he may go alone to produce it. He’s already thinking about a potential plot for X-Files 3:
“As you know the date of December 2012 is an important one in ‘The X-Files,’ and I’d like to focus on that.”
_Frank Spotnitz
If I may give an advice to Frank Spotnitz he should focus on aliens in the movie X-Files 3 and maybe also develop what happened to Scully’s toddler. It would make a really great X-Files 3 movie!
WE SAY
Being an X-Files fan is like being caught up in an unstable see-saw relationship. The one moment you’re in love, the next moment you’re in hate. Sure, the best relationships are like that, but still . . .Rewatching some old season five episodes again, we here at The Sci-Fi Movie Page realized what it was that made the show so popular and influential back in the 1990s. Watching X-Files: I Want to Believe and some of the show’s later episodes (after Duchovny has left) however made us realize what it was that made us stop watching it. It simply outstayed its welcome. While we would welcome seeing Mulder and Scully finally thwarting the alien invasion plans scheduled for 2012 it’d more be a case of seeking closure than wanting to rekindle an old flame .
