It all went a bit quiet for Percy Jackson following the release of The Lightning Thief last year. The adaptation of the first in Rick Riordan's young adult series didn't quite break even during its US run, but its performance overseas has apparently now persuaded Fox to get moving on a sequel after all. Sticking faithfully to the chronology of the books, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters is now being actively developed, with Logan Lerman set to return as the titular dyslexic demigod.

There's no director attached yet, with Chris Columbus, who helmed the first film, acting only as producer this time, along with Twilight's Karen Rosenfelt. Different writers too, with The Lightning Thief's Craig Titley (Scooby Doo, Cheaper By the Dozen) handing over the reins to Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. The pair previously wrote the kid-friendly Agent Cody Banks, but also brought us Stephen King adaptation 1408 and a trilogy of quirky biopics in Ed Wood, The People Vs Larry Flynt and Man on the Moon.

The Sea of Monsters is the Argonautical entry in the franchise, involving Percy, demigoddess Annabeth, and Clarissa La Rue (daughter of war god Ares; no relation to Danny) on a quest to find the Golden Fleece and rescue Grover the Satyr from the evil forces of Kronos.

Along with Lerman, The Lightning Thief's main co-leads Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T Jackson and Jake Abel all look set to return (having signed contracts for a series). The starrier bit players (Sean Bean, Rosario Dawson, Pierce Brosnan) are less certain. It's early days yet though: the project doesn't quite have the green light, although according to the LA Times' sources it could start shooting as early as this summer.

Percy Jackson 2 Movie - Percy Jackson Sequel

Nobody is expecting the first Percy Jackson movie to outperform Harry potter, and I'm quite sure it won't. But I've seen the first film and I must admit that's it's quite good: the first Percy Jackson movie benefits from a strong supporting cast, a speedy plot, and plenty of fun with Greek mythology. People in the theater, including me, were really enjoying the film. Director Chris Colombus (who once helmed Harry Potter) still has his magic touch with Percy Jackson. So I'm pretty sure that a movie sequel to Percy Jackson is going to be greenlit.

Actually I've heard that they're already planning Percy Jackson 2, aiming at a release in 2012. the film would be based on The Sea of Monsters, the second novel in the Percy Jackson series written by Rick Riordan.

So the cast from the first film, Logan Lerman, Brandon T Jackson, Alexandra Daddario will most likely reprise their roles respectively as Percy, Grover and Annabeth.

Update: March 3, 2011 - Screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski have been hired by Fox to pen the script of Percy Jackson 2 The Sea of Monsters.

I’ve seen Percy Jackson and it was way better than expected. People in the theater really enjoyed the movie and Grover’s joke. So I think it’s going to be a blockbuster. Director Chris Colombus was quoted as saying:

Well I bet he will go forward with his plan of a franchise based on the Percy Jackson novels written by Rick Riordan. So we may get ready for Percy Jackson 2, the movie sequel to Percy Jackson. The film will most likely be based on Percy Jackson the Sea of Monsters, the second novel in the series by Rick Riordan:

No doubt that Logan Lerman, Brandon T Jackson, Alexandra Daddario will reprise their roles respectively as Percy, Grover and Annabeth: this new franchise will be a real stepping stone to their movie careers.
According to the online rumor, Percy Jackson 2 would be released sometime in 2012.
There’s been a lot of Percy Jackson 2 talk in recent weeks. So what has been said and how likely is a sequel?

There are five books in the Percy Jackson series, so far. The next installment is ‘The Sea Of Monsters’ which sees Percy, Annabeth, and his half-brother Tyson the cyclopes sailing across a dangerous ocean to save the kidnapped Grover and retrieve the Golden Fleece (the only thing that can stop Camp Half-Blood being made vulnerable to an attack by the Titans).

At the London press conference last week director Chris Columbus said “If we are successful enough, I’d love to make another film almost immediately with these guys. We had a wonderful time. I love the enthusiasm and lack of cynicism. I want to go back to work quickly.”

And despite recent Spider-Man casting rumours, it doesn’t sound like star Logan Lerman is going anywhere either. “I’m invested into the whole series. I’m crazy about the story and crazy about the character, I’d love to do all the films.”

The reaction to the first film has been mixed. Critics gave it a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Casual members of the public seemed to half enjoy it. But many fans are angry. According to the feedback on this site and elsewhere, the book wasn’t just compressed (ala Harry Potter), it was “butchered”, its “heart taken out” with major plot re-routing, some characters altered beyond recognition, other key ones dropped entirely, etc. How this will affect repeat viewings and word of mouth we will have to see.

Lightning Thief has made $31 million on its opening weekend in the US. Not terrible, but not spectacular either. Internationally it opened with $28 million, which is underwhelming. It cost around $95 million. As of today, it needs to hold on well domestically and internationally to become a hit. If it does, there will be more.
